How I write my patterns - Miten ohjeeni syntyvät

Today I finished a sweater that is going to be in the book and I also managed to get the pattern together so I could send it to tech editor for checking. When I was cleaning my desk I realized, I've never blogged about how I write my patterns.

Sain tänään yhden kirjaan tulevan neuleen valmiiksi, ohjeineen.

I always start my pattern writing process with maths. I never knit anything besides the swatch before I've calculated all the sizes. This way I know if my idea is gradable. It always isn't.
My spreadsheet contains standard measurements and actual garment measurements including ease. I also have a place for gauge, often gauges, because all cables and stitch patterns have their individual gauges. Swatch tells me these numbers.

Ohjeenkirjoittaminen alkaa aina kokojen laskemisesta.
Mallitilkku kertoo.

I calculate the sizes so they're easy to transfer into pattern, in the same order, using same words. This way I'm able to check if, for example, certain increases are spaced properly and if the total numbers match. I also check if my stitch counts really give me the actual garment measurements I'm looking for.
When I've done the maths, I open text editor, take yarn and needles and start knitting and writing the pattern. Because the calculations were already written as the pattern, it's quite easy to follow them. I knit at the same time as I write so I can add helpful notes to the pattern.

Koska laskentataulukko on jo kirjoitettu ohjeen muotoon, on varsinaisen ohjeen kirjoittaminen suht nopeaa. Neulon samalla kun kirjoitan, joten voin lisätä ohjeeseen vinkkejä neulojan työtä helpottamaan.

When I've finished knitting and pattern writing, I'll add a new table to my spreadsheet for checking. I write the pattern with all the numbers to that table and recheck the numbers and desired measurements. I usually do it twice to be sure to catch all the errors. I also calculate yarn amounts at this point.
After that, I read the pattern and try to make it more clear and easier to follow. And then it's off to the tech editor.

  1. Thank you for the insight into your process! That is pretty much how I was imagining it to be, but apparently I have this twisted desire to do things backwards (i.e. knit the thing and then write the pattern).

    Sigh.

  2. wau. Olisi kiva nähdä tällainen taulukko, mun mielikuvitus on onneton :D.

  3. Virginia, I miss those times I did backwards :) It's so relaxing just to knit first and calculate (if necessary) afterwards.

Kaikki muu on laskentakaaviota toisen perään :)

  4. Tosi kiva kuulla miten ohje syntyy! Kiitos jakamisesta! Seuravaaksi toiveissa -miten ja mistä ideat syntyvät ja kasvavat... :)

  5. It sure sounds like a lot of work, but it must be so rewarding once it is available! Love the pics on that post!

  8. We all benefit and are inspired by your creations. I'm wondering if there is some computer software that you recommend using to make charts. Have any suggestions?

  9. Hi Anastasia, thank you for your kind words! We both use Knit Visualizer. There's a demo version that you can download for free to make sure this is what you are looking for and then buy the full version if you think it's good.
