Hey, there's a hole in the underarm! - Reikä kainalossa!

There are several ways to close underarm gaps and I thought I'd show you mine. This applies to underarm stitches that are bound off, not to the ones that are left as live stitches on holders. Though I also leave underarm stitches on holders in many projects, I prefer binding them off. Not for any particular reason, just a personal preference.

There are two identical photos of each phase, one without drawings to give you a better picture about how it looks and one where I show what excactly did I do. The main problem with underarm seams are the loose stitches that tend to appear to both ends of underarm stitches. One way to resolve this problem is just tighten them up by loosening some other stitches on the same row but when the other stitches are already perfect, I'm not tempted to loosen them.

Jokaisesta vaiheesta on kaksi samanlaista kuvaa, toiseen on piirretty mitä teen ja toisessa näkyy ilman piirustuksia miltä neule missäkin vaiheessa oikeasti näyttää. Suurin ongelma (ainakin minulla) on löysät silmukat kummallakin puolella saumaa.

  4. great one! I always have loose stitches or something very ugly - I've added this page to "knitting techniques" list :)
    Thanks!

  5. It's even easier if you leave the stiches live (on a safety pin) instead of casting off under the arm. It also makes a nicer wrong side.

  6. Thank you all! I'm glad you found this useful!

Lappesola, as I said in the post, I do place live stitches on holders also and kitchener stitch them together, but I don't like it as much as binding off. It works better for me and the underarm seam looks nicer this way.

Kiitos kaikille, kiva olla hyödyksi! :)

Kiitos tuhannesti!

  8. It's so useful! I thought I might avoid that problem by always knitting sleeves separately ;-) It looks so neat! I did like fridica and saved it into my favorites! Many thanks! This was a mystery to me!

  10. Thank you SO much. I thought I was the only one who got those loose stitches each side of the bind off and it is really reassuring to see the experts do too. I almost feel like casting on another sweater so I can practise this straight away!

  15. Kiitos ohjeesta! Tästä opin vihdoin miten silmukoidaan, aikaisemmat yritykset ovat päätyneet vähemmän onnistuneesti.
